East West Rail Information

As it currently stands, the route that East West Rail proposes to build between Bedford and Cambridge is the most expensive (around £8 billion) and environmentally damaging of the options considered. They went against advice from their own advisors to select this route which goes through greenbelt, open countryside, wildlife corridors, fertile farmland and close to many villages. The contours of this route are unnecessarily challenging, meaning a 10m embankment will be necessary along a lot of it’s path.

Comberton Greenways meeting

Proposed improvements for pedestrians and cyclists in the village

Update on the Comberton Greenways from the Parish Council
Some residents may have noticed signs and received letters indicating that roadworks are starting in Comberton related to the Comberton Greenways.

Recently, a Traffic Regulation Order was issued relating to:

  • New speed limits in the village
  • Raised tables
  • Reduction of junction width
  • New pedestrian crossings.

An update on the Comberton Greenways is given below:

Works on Long Road and adjacent roads

Improvements to Long Road and adjacent roads, including speed-limiting measures, are planned as part of the Comberton Greenway. However, these works will not occur for many months, and design drawings have not been produced. As a result, while we have noted residents’ comments, we will not discuss these plans until designs are available.

Speed limits

The Traffic Regulation Order proposed a new 40 mph limit on Long Road up to a point south of Branch Road, and a new 20 mph from that point down to the junction to Barton Road, and on Barton Road and West Street where the limit is currently 30 mph.

We have heard feedback from residents who wish for the speed limit reduction to encompass all streets in the village. We are therefore working with the Greenway team to obtain a 20 mph speed limit on all roads currently limited to 30 mph, and 40 mph on the Green End and Branch Road section which is currently limited to 60mph.

Works on Barton Road, West Street and adjacent roads

The proposed design includes three raised tables (similar to a speed bump but with an expanded flat surface) corresponding to essential crossing points for pedestrians:

  • In front of Comberton Village College. It is a condition on the Co-Op planning application that a zebra crossing is built. The Co-op is paying for these works via what is known as Section 106.
  • At the Green End/South Street junction, providing informal and safer crossing points for the dentist, GP, playgroup, pub, and village shop at this busy junction that currently has only one zebra crossing.
  • Next to the junction with Harbour Avenue, providing an informal crossing point for primary school children.

In addition, it is proposed to decrease the width of junctions with side streets and add raised tables at the entrance to some side streets. This would apply to Harbour Avenue, Woottens Close, Kentings, and Barrons Way at their junctions with Barton Road.

At the time of writing (Mid October 2023) , the works to build the zebra crossing opposite Comberton Village College are planned to start on 23rd Oct.

The other works proposed for the village will be presented via detailed and simplified drawings, with an opportunity for discussion and questions, at an information event on Wednesday, 8th November, from 2 pm to 6:30 pm at the Village Hall.

All the proposed works aim to:

  • Enforce a new 20mph speed limit across the village;
  • Force cars to slow down at essential crossing points, either on the main road or at side streets;
  • Reduce street crossing distances for pedestrians;
  • Support street crossing for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

Comberton Objection to Endurance proposals published

Comberton Objects!

Comberton Parish Council submitted its evidence led objection to the Retirement ‘Village’ to the SCDC Planning Portal on 16th June.

Comberton Parish Council Strongly Objects to the Proposed Retirement Village on the Land South of Branch Road, Comberton. This document states the reasons for that objection and concerns that our community has raised. A public meeting was held by Comberton Parish Council on 24th May to allow Parishioners to voice their opinion.

Comberton Parish Council is concerned that the number of discrepancies and omissions within the application lead to an incorrect view of the proposal. This is especially evident in the Green Belt Assessment, the Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, the Balance Assessment and the Biodiversity Assessment.

Comberton Parish Council, representing current and future residents of Comberton, does not believe this application shows integration of the retirement complex into the village of Comberton and that a very separate community would be added to our thriving village.

The application does not reflect the needs of a C2 level development nor shows that this is the best location in the district for this development. The needs of future residents are not at the forefront of design, and the location and design do not have sustainability as a priority.

The impact on the rural village of Comberton is high. The location of an oversized, out of keeping set of buildings in the middle of a green lung space is insensitive and inappropriate. The necessary lighting and development will impact many species, including Red-listed birds and highly protected Barbastrelle bats.

The changes to Branch Road will forever change a rural lane and its verges and hedgerows. New paths across the recreation ground will change peaceful, rural areas of the village amenity. Proposed re-wilding of wild areas, in an effort to increase biodiversity figures, will cause great harm to the rural centre of our village.

Services for C2 and other residents over 65 have not been adequately considered. Both the GP Surgery and ICB have stated that the treatment rooms in the proposed clubhouse building cannot be used by the NHS for treatment. No adequate travel has been proposed to enable residents to get to the GP surgery. Comberton & Eversden GP Practice is already over capacity and does not have any more physical space to accommodate a larger patient list.

Residents are very concerned about impact to the drainage and sewage systems as the village regularly experiences flooding, both of rainwater but also sewage. The design suggests that this situation could be made worse.

Parking Enforcement Works in Comberton

Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC), in partnership with South Cambridgeshire District (SCDC) and the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) have resolved to bring Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) to the District of South Cambridgeshire.

CPE, is a system of parking governance that allows the Highway Authority, CCC, the power to carry out parking enforcement using its own agents rather than relying on the Constabulary to provide that function.

In order to be able to carry out this service, surveys have been undertaken of the condition of the regulatory signs and lines on the highway within the District. The signs and lines need to be in an enforceable condition.

CCC Highways Service operators will be working in the area, either maintaining or installing regulatory equipment.

Dates are as follows:

9th-10th March

Barton Road
Fox’s Way
Harbour Avenue

5th-6th April

Barton Road
Harbour Avenue

One might expect restricted parking near to the line remarking areas so look for warning signs.
